Seraphim and Nephilim

In the World of Epimetheus, there are two biblical races: the Seraphim and the Nephilim. There is only a brief mention of them in the Bible, but it is believed that the Book of Giants, which was removed when the original canon was written, goes into greater detail about these two beings. But let us share with you what we have learned and what direction we went in.


The Seraphim are fallen angels who were cast out of heaven for siding with Lucifer during a coup. As the lore goes, Lucifer, being the most magnificent of all of God's creations, sought to assume the throne of Heaven by overthrowing his creator. There is some debate about the motivation of this move. Some say that Lucifer refused to bow down to mankind as we were created to be higher than the angels themselves leading to division among the celestial heavens. Others claim that Lucifer argued on behalf of mankind's souls which were destined to wander aimlessly throughout time in the afterlife. As you can see one side casts Lucifer as the hero whilst the other deems him the enemy of mankind.

Further research into the Bible (NKJV) itself does little to clarify the reasons behind this ecclesiastic event, but it is made clear that Satan/Lucifer is not to be trusted. That being said we have gone with the idea that fallen angels have an inherently good nature, with respect and honor toward all of life. There are many stories about angels and their description varies, but for the purpose of this game, we have gone with a somewhat traditional, albeit mainstream, image of angels.

Nephilim, on the other hand, are half angel and half man. It is believed that the seed of angels was so potent that they could procreate with any of God's creatures. In fact, it is believed by some that their spawn gave way to our mythological stories of many creatures of lore. In the end, God looked upon these hybrids as abominations and soon cleansed the earth of them with a great flood. But not before gathering thorough breeds of each of his original creations upon an ark built by his trusted servant Noah. The story of Noah is a timeless one told many times and is known by nearly every Sunday school child in the world.

We are not here to dispute theology, but this is our take on the history of Man and angels. So in the case of the Nephilim we have made them more demonic in appearance with a hunger for power and chaos. This provides a polar opposite to the Seraphim and should work well to keep game mechanics balanced. As things stand right now they are the only two races with the ability to fly, but there will eventually need to be a neutral race that can match them in height, flight, and longevity.
